The Changwon Cultural Foundation (CEO Cho Youngpa) will host the Prologue Exhibition of the 7th Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2024 from December 13 to 29 at the former buffet space of Seongsan Art Hall.

Subtitled “Speaking about the Future – Shape, Map, Tree,” the exhibition features 20 artists actively working in Korea and abroad, including Shim Jeongsoo, Jung Hyun, and Choi Goeun. As the opening chapter of next year’s main biennale, the Prologue Exhibition explores three key concepts: Shape, as the form of sculpture; Map, as the planning and structure of Changwon; and Tree, as an agenda for coexistence. These three motifs serve as a compass to guide the forthcoming biennale’s thematic focus on Matter, Future, and Nature, and examine the relationship between sculpture and the act of making.

Breaking away from the conventional white cube of museums, the exhibition utilizes the former buffet hall in the basement of Seongsan Art Hall, allowing visitors to encounter the experimental and daring approaches of contemporary sculptors. Within the restaurant and kitchen areas of the former buffet space, works exploring relationships with material, nature, and community will be on display.

The exhibition will also feature archival materials that trace the history of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale, a cartographic overview of sculpture in Changwon, and profiles of local sculptors. Additionally, interview videos with international curators—including Jason Wee (Singapore), Ryoka Rikyuu (Japan), and Tessa Maria Guazon (Philippines)—will be presented.

Through the Prologue Exhibition, the Changwon Sculpture Biennale reflects on the city’s legacy as a “city of sculpture,” and aims to connect the past, present, and future of sculpture with international discourses and current trends. Admission to the exhibition is free.
