In Hyongryol Bak’s solo exhibition 《LAYERS OF LAND》, the ongoing series ‘Figure Project’ (2013– ) consists of photographic and video works that document temporary transformations of land or elements of nature through various physical experiments and actions carried out within seemingly ordinary natural spaces that often escape public attention. These interventions are recorded from an aerial, bird’s-eye perspective.

‘Figure Project’ unfolds in two primary modes. The first involves digging or shaping natural terrain into abstract forms, thereby revealing the concealed inner layers of the land that are not ordinarily visible. Even what appears to be a simple surface reveals multiple faces through the process of intervention. These variations seem to arise from environmental factors such as the materials composing the land, moisture, and temperature, as well as the diverse qualities of light that illuminate them.

The second mode reintroduces figures that had previously appeared in earlier works—individuals who emerged within sculptural spaces formed by fabric and thread across expansive terrains, embodying gestures of occupation and escape. In this series, set in a reclaimed tidal flat along the West Sea where stones have been fractured by intense physical force, these figures simultaneously reveal the cracks in the land while performing actions that attempt to fill them.

This project simultaneously presents a sculpturally realized space of geometric abstraction and the varied textures inherent to the land itself. Through the traces of fractures exposed by the structuring of dominant landscapes and performative acts of healing, it experiments with alternative possibilities for the urban landscapes that humans continue to construct.
