Marking its 7th edition, the 2016 Seoul Photo Festival was held under the title 《Seoul New 新 Arirang – Like Thousand Miles of Rivers》, symbolizing the themes of “globalization” and “diaspora.” Over the past half-century, Seoul’s rapid economic growth has driven its globalization, bringing significant changes to the city’s landscape, structure, and the identities of its inhabitants. Moreover, unlike the past when migration was largely driven by political and religious issues, contemporary forms of diaspora have transformed Seoul into a multicultural metropolis.

The 2016 Seoul Photo Festival provided an opportunity to reflect on these contemporary issues of “globalization” and “diaspora” through a main exhibition and special exhibitions featuring works by around 30 photographers who sensitively engage with these social dynamics, as well as related symposiums, civic forums, and workshops. Furthermore, it aimed to differentiate itself as a city-level photography festival by fostering the production and sharing of exhibition content that encourages participation and resonance among both professionals and the general public.
