SPACE ÆFTER’s exhibition 《NO GEOGRAPHY》 constitutes the second discussion on the curatorial theme, “What is matter in art?”, which has been explored across 2022 and 2023. While the first exhibition, 《Wild Wild Matter》, approached art as matter through the lens of the “body,” this exhibition proposes the potential of art as a material medium. Art is matter, and matter exists as an interconnected state of mediation. If so, what kind of medium can art, as matter, become? This question lies at the core of the exhibition, and the works of Sun Choi and Hyongryol Bak, which reflect upon the primordial theme of nature, serve as points of departure for this inquiry.

《NO GEOGRAPHY》 explores the ways in which art exists as an active connective entity within the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. It is an encounter with the fact that human actions are directly manifested in matter, and that this matter, in turn, is manifested as art. This encounter appears to us—humans—through taste, sight, trace, touch, and sound, that is, through every interface of experience, and such experiences interact with the transformations and movements of matter. Through these processes of art, we come to recognize that humans are not exceptional beings, and at the same time, we re-perceive the absurdities of human actions through nature.

《NO GEOGRAPHY》 forms a new assemblage that extends from the small crystalline unit of salt to the vast entity of a mountain, through the natural elements of sea and land as presented in the salt works of Sun Choi and the images of Hyongryol Bak. In other words, the insights revealed in their works call for a new mode of coexistence through art, and this is the result of prolonged observation and continuous experimentation aimed at visualizing otherwise invisible states of material experience.
