The Ilwoo Foundation, a public-interest foundation under Hanjin Group, announced the winners of the 10th Ilwoo Photography Award. Established in 2009 to discover promising photographers with talent and passion, the Ilwoo Photography Award marks its 10th edition this year.

The 10th Ilwoo Photography Award recipients are Doyeon Gwon (39) in the Book category, Hyongryol Bak (39) in the Exhibition category, and Dongkeun Lee (53) in the Documentary category. The jury included photography critic Pyung Jong Park, Park Sang-Woo, professor of aesthetics at Seoul National University, and photographer Park Jongwoo, along with Beate Cegielska (Denmark), director of ‘Galleri Image,’ and Willem van Zoetendaal (Netherlands), a graphic designer.

In the Book category, Doyeon Gwon was selected for her works such as ‘The Art of Shovel’ and ‘Flashbulb Memory’, through which she has persistently explored the relationship between materiality and memory. The jury stated, “Gwon’s recent works focusing on stray dogs near Bukhansan evoke sorrowful memories of animals before they were reduced to abandoned pets. The way she elevates this sense of melancholy and pathos through the classical aesthetics of black-and-white photography was highly regarded.”

Hyongryol Bak was selected in the Exhibition category. He utilizes photography to actively intervene in neglected nature, revealing the mysterious forms of the earth that have long been hidden deep beneath the surface. The jury commented, “On one hand, his work raises fundamental questions that prompt reflection on the relationship between humans and nature; on the other, it was highly evaluated for its methodological approach that expands the possibilities of the photographic medium.”

Dongkeun Lee, who addresses issues surrounding multicultural families, was selected as the winner in the Documentary category. The jury noted, “Not only is the subject matter timely and expansive, but his sustained engagement with this topic over more than a decade was highly valued. In particular, his dedication and intensity in traveling even to the immigrants’ countries of origin fully demonstrate the authenticity of his work.”

Meanwhile, the Ilwoo Photography Award selects two to three artists each year and supports them through production, exhibitions, and publications to help foster internationally competitive artists.
