ONE AND J. Gallery presents 《the moments》 by contemporary artist Jang Minseung and composer-producer Jaeil Jung. The exhibition features photographs of the sea captured over the past three years alongside music composed and performed in response to those images. The exhibition consists of two installation works, a surround-channel sound composition, and a large-scale video work.

This exhibition began with a journey shared by the artist and his longtime friend Jaeil Jung, set against the winter sea in 2010. Like the ocean—which appears constant yet moves ceaselessly—they sought to record fleeting moments through the emotional states and relationships that people experience, using the familiar mediums of photography and music. The winter sea became the concrete subject, while photography (light) and music (sound), forms deeply familiar to the artist, served as the means of recording. While Jang Minseung photographed the sea, Jaeil Jung composed and performed music corresponding to each individual image. The emotions generated by the combination of multiple sea photographs and their paired musical compositions are intended to be shared intimately with viewers.

For this exhibition, the artist also developed a new interface called “photo-phonics,” through which audiences can experience music matched with photography in an effort to move beyond conventional notions of contemporary art. More specifically, the carefully arranged photographs appear simultaneously still and in motion through theatrical lighting effects and resulting optical illusions, transforming into unique images in which movement seems suspended or suspension itself appears to move. At the same time, the music (sound) is synchronized with the lighting through a specially designed system.

Jang Minseung and Jaeil Jung began their first collaborative project, A. intermission, at 《PLATFORM IN KIMUSA》 in 2009, followed in 2011 by spheres part I in mullae-dong, a smartphone-based public art project presented in Mullae-dong. Their forthcoming exhibition 《the moments》 continues this ongoing collaboration. The sustained collaborative practice between the two artists has consistently explored the theme of “music and the memory of place.” Through 《the moments》, the artists present to viewers the intertwined experiences of seeing and listening, as well as memories associated with music, place, and time.
