The Arts Council Korea (Chairman Oh Kwangsoo) and Arko Art Center present 《2011 Media-Archive Project: Video+Cast》 from October 5 to October 30, 2011, at the Project Space on the first floor of Arko Art Center and Insa Art Space.

Arko Art Center houses approximately 6,000 visual arts archive materials, including specialized publications on contemporary art, video resources, and portfolios by Korean artists. By opening these materials not only to artists and curators but also to students and the general public, the institution has contributed to academic development while providing broader opportunities for deeper engagement with visual art.

This project aims to examine the trajectory of Korean video art and media art from the 2000s to the present through the public presentation of new works from Arkomedia, Arko’s collection of Korean single-channel video works within its archive holdings.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a symposium and a participatory media workshop have also been organized to explore the historical development of Korean video art, consider future directions for the construction and activation of media archives, and provide opportunities for the public to create media artworks themselves.

Through this project, Arko Art Center hopes to encourage broader audiences to deepen their understanding of media art and recognize the importance of specialized media archives.

While last year’s project focused on transforming perceptions of video art—traditionally regarded as an “old” medium—by enabling audiences to experience works through portable personal media devices such as smartphones, this year’s project places greater emphasis on sharing artworks through podcasts.

By dissolving temporal and spatial boundaries, the project seeks to create an environment in which media art can be encountered as part of everyday life, thereby fostering broader public engagement and participation in media art.

Podcasting is a new form of media distribution and database system that allows television, radio, music, video files, and personal media content to be updated and shared globally. With the explosive spread of smartphones, podcasts have rapidly amassed a vast international user base, and their growth signals the limitless potential for the expansion of cultural content. It is within this context that the project was titled 《Video+Cast》.
