The style festival “2012 Style Icon Awards (SIA)” announced the winning works of its media artist discovery project, the “SIA Media Art Awards.”

Held from August 22 to October 5, the competition was organized under the theme of “New Mix,” exploring the intersections between genres, past and present, people and culture, and selected a total of six winning works.

The six winning works included Junebum Park’s Weather & Shadow, Suk Sungsuk’s Noise Film_199809_SC, Kim Byeong-gwan’s Polluted Evidence, Mi Sung’s Liquid Crystal, Shin Kiwoun’s A Week Daydream, and Lee Jongsuk’s Wave in the City.

The winning work, Weather & Shadow, received high praise for its imaginative and fantastical portrayal of weather and shadows—constantly changing throughout the day—captured within a single location and made to coexist within one space. Artist Junebum Park explained, “I wanted to express the tension involved in the process through which the environment surrounding me is reconstructed through my own perspective.”

Junebum Park, the overall winner, received a KRW 20 million production grant as well as the opportunity to work as a creative director at CJ E&M for one year. In addition, the five finalists each received KRW 2 million in production support, while all six selected artists were given the opportunity to exhibit their works at Seoul Museum of Art and participate in the SeMA Nanji Residency program.

All awarded works were also exhibited and screened during “SIA,” held over two days on October 24 and 25.

The “SIA Media Art Awards” was launched in collaboration with Seoul Museum of Art as a project to strategically foster media art, an emerging field within contemporary art, and to discover talented media artists.

The jury consisted of seven experts from the fields of visual art and media, including Kim Hong-hee, Director of Seoul Museum of Art; Manu Park, Director of Nam June Paik Art Center; Hong Tack Kim, Master of Cheil Worldwide Inc.; art critic Geun-jun Lim; film director John H. Lee of A Moment to Remember; actor and sculptor Shin Sung-woo; and commercial director Yu Kwang Goeng.

Meanwhile, the “SIA” awards ceremony was simultaneously broadcast live on October 25 at 8 PM across six CJ E&M channels, including the lifestyle channels OnStyle, XTM, StoryOn, Olive, the entertainment channel tvN, and the music channel Mnet.
