The 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival will publish a series of books that provide a comprehensive introduction to this year’s festival. The lineup consists of six publications in total—four in Korean and two in English—including the second edition of J Magazine, a magazine-format festival guide first introduced last year.

The publications are as follows.

J Magazine (Korean Edition)

A comprehensive guide to the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival presented in magazine format. The publication includes detailed information on all 217 films from 57 countries screened at the festival, along with director interviews, film reviews, and essays on the festival’s special programs.

This year’s edition features interviews with Kogonada, director of the opening film After Yang; Eric Gravel, director of the closing film Full Time; director Shin Su-won of Hommage; and actor Kang Gil-woo from The Layover, among other filmmakers and film professionals. Reviews of festival selections by renowned film critics are also included, providing useful guidance for audiences deciding which films to see.

In addition, the magazine offers practical local information about Jeonju, including bookstores, walking routes, cafés, and shops. During the festival period, it will be available for purchase at bookstores and cafés throughout the city.

Films That Never Stop Asking Questions (Korean and English Editions)

This publication offers readers an opportunity to survey and gain a deeper understanding of the cinematic world that director Lee Chang-dong has developed over the past twenty-five years. It features distinctive essays on his films and artistic practice by nine film critics from Korea and abroad, as well as a recent interview with the director.

The book was specially conceived in conjunction with the section 《Lee Chang-dong: The Truth of the Invisible》, organized for the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival. It is particularly significant as the first book devoted to Lee Chang-dong and his films in which the director himself directly participated. An English edition has also been published for the many international admirers of Lee Chang-dong’s work.

Great Expectations: Taehung Pictures 1984-2004 (Korean and English Editions)

Jointly produced by the Jeonju International Film Festival and the Korean Film Archive, this publication serves both as an archive of Taehung Pictures and as a commemorative volume honoring the late Lee Tae-won, former president of the company.

Through interviews, essays, full-color visual materials, and statistical records, the book examines the remarkable achievements of Taehung Pictures, a company that played a pivotal role in the revival of Korean cinema from the 1980s through the early 2000s.

Taehung Pictures was the production company behind such landmark Korean films as Come Come Come Upward (1989), The General’s Son (1990), Sopyonje (1993), Chunhyang (2000), and Painted Fire (2002). The company achieved historic milestones, including producing the first Korean film to surpass one million admissions and winning a major prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

At the festival’s opening ceremony, the Jeonju International Film Festival plans to present a Lifetime Achievement Award to the late Lee Tae-won in recognition of his contributions to Korean cinema.

Borderless Storytellers: Eight Artists Expanding the Boundaries of the Moving Image (Korean Edition)

This publication features interviews with eight artists whose practices expand the boundaries of the moving image. It was conceived as part of the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival’s most challenging and experimental section, 《Expanded Cinema+》, with the aim of deepening audiences’ understanding of the participating artists and their work.

Breaking away from the conventional focus on filmmakers alone, the publication turns its attention to artists from a range of disciplines who use moving images as a primary medium, offering insight into the spirit of contemporary art.

As suggested by the book’s subtitle, the eight featured artists—Mackerel Safranski, Keem Younggle, Jina KIM, Kim Heecheon, Moojin Brothers, Joowon Song, Oh Jae hyeong, and Soohyun Hwang—have each explored how far the moving image can be extended beyond its traditional boundaries, drawing on backgrounds in visual art, literature, virtual reality, dance, and music.

While their works all possess cinematic qualities, they also propose new modes of existence for storytelling itself. Bringing together the distinctive perspectives of artists who have pursued sustained and rigorous inquiries within their respective fields, the publication offers a compelling portrait of contemporary moving-image practice.

Publications produced for the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival are available through major online bookstores throughout Korea as well as the festival’s online merchandise shop.

Meanwhile, the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival will take place from today through May 7 in the Jeonju Cinema Town district, with online screenings available through ONFIFN, the online platform dedicated to Korean film festivals.
