The “77 days of life” lived by a small kidney bean were extraordinary. Embedded within Jung Seung’s sculptural work Prometheus’s String VI was the invisible wonder of life itself.

《DA VINCI CREATIVE 2019》 was held at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, operated by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, through September 11. Eight Korean artist teams and five international artist teams presented experimental artworks and performances that posed a variety of questions about “what life is” and “how we should live.”

At the festival, Jung Seung presented Prometheus’s String VI. After three years of development, the 'Prometheus’s String' series had evolved to its sixth iteration.

“The first version collected data through sensors over the 77-day process of a kidney bean growing and dying, and fed that data into a computer,” Jung explained. “Based on this data, I used a 3D printer to produce a new form each day, gradually creating the work.”

The artist gathered data generated throughout the plant’s growth process. In addition to temperature, humidity, light levels, and the plant’s size, he also collected ambient sounds and movements from the surrounding environment.

“Plants are affected by the presence of people nearby,” Jung explained. These various data sets resulted in richly diverse forms. While the basic structure produced by the 3D printer was spherical, new layers accumulated every thirty minutes according to incoming data, making the final outcome impossible to predict.

Choosing which plants to work with is an important part of the process. Jung recalled, “When discussions about a unified Korean team emerged, I wanted to address the issue of division through my work. With advice from Lee Jeong-ho, director of the DMZ Native Botanical Garden of the Korea National Arboretum, I selected plant species native to the DMZ.”

The 'Prometheus’s String' series, which embodies the artist’s philosophy, continues to evolve. By its sixth version, it had even expanded into robotics. This development resulted from a collaboration with a friend who works as a researcher at ROBOTIS, a company listed on the KOSDAQ market.

The lights attached to the robot visualized hourly fine dust concentration data for Gwangjin District received from the Korea Meteorological Administration. The large moving sculpture invited viewers to imagine countless possibilities.

The artist’s ideas are clearly reflected in the title of the work. Jung explained, “Prometheus brought fire to humanity, making civilization possible, but at the same time he also introduced destructive forces such as disease and hatred. I believe life and death always coexist. The human body is no different.”

In the first half of 2020, Jung Seung planned to present a solo exhibition featuring the 'Prometheus’s String' series at the Korean Cultural Center in Paris.

Jung Seung, who also runs a personal YouTube channel, is deeply interested in making art more accessible to the public. The performances connected to his works stem from this interest. On August 22, he presented a performance titled Scattered Scream before members of the press.

A participant connected to 'Prometheus’s String' struggled to speak through a microphone attached to a gas mask, yet the words never reached the audience. Combined with projected video imagery, the performance delivered a powerful impact.

“Society is becoming increasingly digitized,” Jung said. “Things like resident registration numbers seem to become a kind of personality that represents us, but they are not the actual person. A person's unique scent cannot easily be digitized. In the process of digitization, things become flattened and crushed, making it difficult to find their true essence.”
