The Korea Galleries Association (Chair Hwang Dal-Seung) has announced the ten semifinalists for Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS, a special program spotlighting artists to watch at Kiaf SEOUL 2024, which opens on September 4.

Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS is a platform dedicated to showcasing the dynamism of contemporary art while discovering promising emerging artists. Launched last year, the initiative returns for its second edition under the theme “New Discoveries & Fresh Encounters.” A five-member jury selected ten semifinalists they believe are among the most noteworthy artists participating in Kiaf 2024.

The jury, composed of distinguished figures from the art world—including professors, independent curators, and museum curators—will conduct an on-site evaluation on the opening day of Kiaf to select three finalists from the ten semifinalists. Each of the three artists selected for the Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS Final List will receive a KRW 10 million production grant.

◆Three Finalists to Be Selected from Ten Semifinalists

The ten artists selected as semifinalists for Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS 2024 are Kang CheolGyu (Arario Gallery), Xi'an Kim (Artside Gallery), Kim Eunjin (Keumsan Gallery), Paige Jiyoung MOON (Steve Turner), Betty Muffler (Jan Murphy Gallery), Wonmi Seo (La Heen Gallery), Jochen Pankrath (Bode Galerie), Sejun Lee (Space Willing N Dealing), Jiwon Choi (ThisWeekendRoom), and Han Jin (Gallery SP). To provide more focused attention to each participant, the number of selected artists was reduced from twenty last year to ten this year.

The jury evaluated artists of various generations who submitted previously unseen new projects, considering artistic quality, contemporaneity, originality, and artistic identity. They also assessed whether each artist had established a sustainable relationship with their representing gallery, providing a strong foundation for continued growth within the art market.

Artists selected for Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS will be featured in interviews published in the Kiaf catalog and on the fair's website. They will also be introduced through Kiaf's official social media channels, while their works will receive special displays marked with HIGHLIGHTS signage in their respective gallery booths, offering a range of promotional opportunities.

One juror commented, “Many of the selected artists demonstrated evidence of long-term dedication to exploring personal introspection, social messages, or visual refinement in their work. They have achieved a high level of artistic maturity and show great potential to develop distinctive artistic voices in the future.”

◆Kiaf × KAMS × Frieze Joint Talk Program

In addition to the exhibition, Kiaf will once again collaborate with the Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS) and Frieze to present a joint talk program featuring leading international art professionals alongside figures from the Korean art community. The program aims to foster new critical discourse and contribute to the continued growth of the Korean art world.

Held from September 5 to 7 at STUDIO 159 on the second floor of COEX, this year's program will feature nine sessions covering topics such as “Explosive Canvases: Illuminating the Shifting Landscape of Art Fairs in the Tapestry of the Art Market” and “Echoes of Tomorrow: Redefining Art in the Age of Technological Transition.”

The discussions will examine diverse aspects of the contemporary art ecosystem, including the role of art fairs, the relationship between art and society, collaborations between curators and galleries, the intersections of the art market and biennials, and feminism in Asian art, while exploring future directions for the field.

Featured speakers include Clara Kim (Chief Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles), Binna Choi (Curator, 2025 Hawaii Triennial), Lin Han (Founder and Collector, M WOODS Museum), Josh Baer (Founder, Baer Faxt), and Rajeeb Samdani (Founder, Samdani Art Foundation).

The talk program is open to the public without requiring admission to Kiaf or Frieze. It will also be livestreamed online, allowing anyone to participate remotely by registering in advance. Registration opens on August 22 through the official social media channels of Kiaf and the Korea Arts Management Service.
