Minjung Key’s work begins from small things in everyday life: a book she had put off reading, a video she happened to encounter, news from far across the sea. The news of a painter who became a hot-air balloon pilot was one of them.

The flight time of a hot-air balloon is usually early morning or late afternoon. At the time when the sun hangs low, hot air rises and cold air rushes in from around it to fill the empty place, and the balloon rises from the ground using the warm wind of that moment.

From a position neither too high nor too low, rather than looking out toward some unknowably distant place, it flies through the sky while listening to the sounds of the ground and fully embracing the places where its gaze reaches.

The artist carefully shaped this story into works and a short story, then moved them into the exhibition space. A landscape contemplated from a low-flying hot-air balloon; within it, paper is crumpled and stood up, plaster is cast and gripped as if wrapping around it, black powder is spilled nearby, and fabric is lowered to imagine the shape of the wind.

The sight of a dried brush absorbing water and color and swelling gently resembled a hot-air balloon pleasantly inflated with warm air, so she gently pressed it down with ink, lest it fly far away.

In this way, the artist’s studio seeped into the exhibition space. This summer, which exists only once and will never return in the same form again, stands on a rustling pile of paper and slowly slides, or hangs on a sunlit window and trembles transparently.
