HITE Collection’s first exhibition of the year 2014, entitled 《When the Future Ended》, presents the works of 11 young artists from February 7 through May 10.

In this exhibition Kang Jungsuck, Daum Kim, Dong Kyu Kim, Sylbee Kim, RohwaJeong, Suh Bo Kyung, Byung-su Lee, Jungah LeeYang, Seung-il Chung, Yun Choi, and Jeong Sik Ham participate on the recommendation of the 6 senior artists: hongsok Gim, Chankyong Park , Kyuchul Ahn, Inhwan Oh, Seoyoung Chung, and Yeondoo Jung. Rather than being regulated by specific age or career, they are seen as the artists of “the next generation”.

The artists are critical of the current phenomenon of neologism (e.g. 880,000 Won Generation, which is similar to the 1,000 Euro Generation of the West) or the society’s unilateral judgment that easily restrict today’s younger generation.

This leads to their sense of awareness and hence sharing the sensibility within the scope of the politics, economy, society, and culture of this era. They work with those that are originated from their personal experience and form social ties by delivering the stories of their generation.

The exhibition title 《When the Future Ended》 is borrowed from the first chapter of Franco Bifo Berardi’s book, Precarious Rhapsody, to recognize the situation now in 2014 resembles that back in 1977, the time when Bifo started to realize the gap between workers and capitalism expedited by the rapid industrialization.

37 years have passed but people still struggle for survival, going through instable lives despite the growth of information technology and industry. This exhibition portrays each artist’s idea and perspective on such uncertain and ambiguous present.

By having the established senior artists recommend the younger artists, HITE Collection refuses the existing ways of artist selection based on competition, but rather embraces both generations to bring communication and understanding between the two generations. The exhibition catalog has texts and interviews of both senior artists and the participating artists, showing the difference between their artistic points of view.
