On the 27th, Incheon Metropolitan City held its second expert research seminar in preparation for the establishment and opening of the Incheon Museum Park at the former OCI office building and missionary residence, the planned site of the municipal art museum within Incheon Museum Park. Members of the local art community participated in the seminar.

The expert research seminar brought together art professionals from Korea and abroad and members of the local art community for in-depth discussions on the impact that the museum’s opening may have on the development of the local art scene and the lives of citizens, as well as its future prospects.

The first seminar, held on July 26 at Cosmo40 in Seo-gu, brought together five directors of public art museums—Eun-ju Choi, Director of the Seoul Museum of Art; Jiho Lee, Director of the Jeonnam Museum of Art; Euihyang Yoon, Director of the Daejeon Museum of Art; Seungbo Jun, Director of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art; and Jin-seok Seo, Director of the Busan Museum of Art—to discuss “Cases of Museum Establishment and Opening in Korea and Abroad and Changing Trends in Art Museums.”

The second seminar was attended by senior, mid-career, and emerging artists from Incheon, who shared a wide range of perspectives.

Participants included Jae-up Kim, President of the Incheon Federation of Artistic and Cultural Organizations; Jin Lee Park, Vice President of the Incheon Fine Arts Association; Pyeong-han Jeong, Chair of the Art Committee of the Incheon People’s Art Association; Ki-yul Cha, Professor at Incheon National University; Byungsu Lee, Professor at Inha University; Jang-won Lee, Professor at Incheon Catholic University; Bora Lee, Professor at Gyeongin National University of Education; Eungyu Ryu, Professor at the Korea Broadcasting Art School; Yeom Ji hee, the Incheon Foundation for Arts & Culture’s 2024 Incheon Artist of the Year; and Cho Kyoungjae, Director of Project Space Cosmos.

Under the theme “Distinctive Art Discourse Grounded in Locality,” the seminar addressed a range of topics, including the current state and landscape of the Incheon art scene, the region’s cultural resources and art infrastructure, strategies for establishing Incheon as an East Asian art hub and developing networks, and proposals concerning the role of the museum.

In particular, participants toured the missionary residence and offered a variety of ideas and perspectives on the museum’s site-specificity and identity, as well as possible approaches to the use of its spaces.

The third research seminar will be held on September 10. Art critics and cultural planners will continue the discussion under the theme “A Future-Oriented and Sustainable Art Museum.”

Following the three expert research seminars, an online and offline public forum with citizen participation is scheduled to take place on October 31, based on the topics discussed during the seminars.

The ideas and discussions presented at the expert research seminars and public forum will be made publicly available on the Incheon Metropolitan City website and the project’s promotional website (www.incm-project.com).
