The exhibition for the SONGEUN Art Award, established to discover and support talented contemporary Korean artists, has opened.

The SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation is presenting 《The 21st SONGEUN Art Award Exhibition》 at SONGEUN on Dosan-daero in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, from today through February 12 of next year.

To mark the 21st anniversary of the award and the opening of its new building, the foundation restructured the SONGEUN Art Award and expanded the number of participating artists to 20.

Ahram Kwon, Sungsil Ryu, Jungwoo Lee, Goen Choi, Hoonida Kim, and other artists working across a range of media including painting, sculpture, photography, and video are presenting new works that reflect the diverse landscape of contemporary Korean art.

The artists were selected from among 550 applicants who participated in the preliminary round held in February, and received production support to create the new works presented in the exhibition.

The Grand Prize winner will be announced in January of next year and will receive KRW 20 million in prize money as well as support for a solo exhibition.

The foundation stated that the benefits offered through this year’s SONGEUN Art Award have been significantly expanded through partnerships with the Seoul Museum of Art and Cartier.

Two additional works by the Grand Prize winner will be acquired for the collections of the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation and the Seoul Museum of Art, respectively, while the artist will also be offered a one-year residency at SeMA Nanji Residency, providing continued support for their artistic practice.

The SONGEUN Art Award was established in 2001 to honor the vision of the late SungYeon Yoo, Honorary Chairman and founder of the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation, who sought to contribute to the development of Korean art and culture through public-interest initiatives.
