The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA; Director Sunghee Kim) continues to achieve notable recognition in the international media art scene through its performing arts program. This year, Hoonida Kim, an artist commissioned by MMCA Performing Arts, received an Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica, one of the world’s most prestigious media art awards.

At the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and the Senses: Hoonida Kim’s New Experiment

Since 2018, MMCA Performing Arts has sought to expand the boundaries of art through multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary practices, and these sustained efforts have borne fruit in various forms, including this award, invitations to international exhibitions, and acquisitions by museum collections.

The award-winning work is a further development of Landscape Being Decoded, originally commissioned for 《MMCA Performing Art: Multiverse》. Using autonomous-driving sensors and artificial intelligence (AI), the media artwork is designed to enable viewers to perceive space through new sensory modes, presenting visual and auditory experiences at the intersection of technology and human perception.

The Prix Ars Electronica, which selected the award-winning work, is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious media art award programs, organized by Ars Electronica in Austria and recognizing creative and innovative artists working with digital media.

MMCA Performing Arts: A New Model as a “Production House”

Rather than presenting completed performances, MMCA Performing Arts aims to function as a “Production House.” In other words, it collaborates with artists from the conceptual stage of a work while providing technical and spatial production support. Commissioned works produced through MMCA Performing Arts have achieved meaningful recognition on both domestic and international stages.

Geumhyung Jeong’s Toy Prototype was invited to the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2022, while Go-Eun Im’s Shadow-Forest, co-produced by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, was invited to Drifts Festival in Finland in 2025.

Commissioned works by Hayoun Kwon and Jungju An / Sojung Jun have also entered the collections of public art museums, including the Seoul Museum of Art. In this way, MMCA Performing Arts has established itself as a production platform for contemporary Korean art, playing a central role in expanding an artistic ecosystem that encompasses creation and collaboration, exhibitions and performances, and domestic and international networking.

MMCA Performing Arts has operated monthly programs centered on timely keywords and artistic themes.

In 2023, it explored “Meditation,” followed by “Space” in 2024 and “Forest” in 2025 through collaborative programs with various artists. In particular, it organized collaborative showcases with institutions in Denmark in 2024 and Kyoto, Japan, in 2025, and plans to work with an institution in the Netherlands in 2026.

Through these initiatives, the program is developing into a recurring showcase platform that introduces emerging Korean artists within different international contexts.

Sunghee Kim, Director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, stated, “MMCA Performing Arts has established itself as a program that puts a multidisciplinary role into practice within the contemporary art scene. We will continue to collaborate with institutions in Korea and abroad, fostering artistic coexistence and expanding the broader ecosystem.”
