“I am grateful simply to have been selected as one of the ten artists for this year’s Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS. I see it as a valuable opportunity to introduce my artistic practice to art professionals from Korea and abroad.”

When I met artist Cho Kyoungjae on the 2nd at Gallery Palzo’s booth at Kiaf Seoul, he calmly and steadily explained his works before the many art professionals and visitors gathered at the fair. He is one of the artists named as a semifinalist for this year’s Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS.

This year, Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS focused on artists who have established distinctive practices and sustained their artistic careers for more than a decade. Ten artists recommended by galleries participating in Kiaf were selected based on a comprehensive assessment of their artistic merit and originality, contemporaneity, clearly defined identity, and potential for expansion within an international context.

Born in Jinhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, Cho Kyoungjae studied photography in Korea and completed the Meisterschüler program at the Münster Academy of Art in Germany. He has exhibited at institutions including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) Seoul, the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and the Seoul Museum of Art. He has also been selected for the KT&G SKOPF and SeMA Emerging Artists programs and was a finalist for the SongEun Art Award.

Earlier this year, Cho held a month-long solo exhibition at Gallery Palzo in Daegu. Titled 《Invisible Actors》, the exhibition featured photographs reflecting his meticulous exploration of space and objects, light, and time.

For this presentation, installed in a separate space within the gallery booth, the artist reveals through installation and video the processes that lead to the photographic works he has presented thus far. For those curious about how Cho transforms large, intricately intertwined objects into photographs resembling abstract paintings, the presentation offers a revealing look into his working process.

“I wanted to use the installation works to speak about the forms that emerge while arranging objects in space, as well as the relationships that arise when light and painting are added,” Cho said. “Viewers will be able to experience the subtle interactions between objects, space, and time.”

Meanwhile, Kiaf Seoul announced that, following on-site judging, Gosari (Gallery Shilla) and Nosik Lim (ARARIO GALLERY) were selected as the final Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS artists on the 3rd. Each artist will receive KRW 10 million in support funding.
