Minjung Key has presented works that overturn the flatness of material through experimental installations using xuan paper, and that draw the narratives of others into the picture plane.

Having encountered and absorbed the experiences of others embedded in various media, and interpreted her own emotions or thoughts through them, she seeks a new direction for her work by asking whether she should understand the essence of the materiality inherent in the medium as it is, or represent it in a different way.

In this exhibition, 《Mist of Flames》(SONGEUN, 2021), she focuses on her relationship with the internalized self, expressing the energy of a self that contains an ambivalent attitude toward life: wanting to escape the forward current, yet not only longing for the reverse current.

When a brush is placed on thin xuan paper, where effects appear immediately, colorful moisture seeps in, and the form born from the instantaneous act led by the brush leaves a mysterious first impression, taking on the shape of an organism whose vivid colors become clear the moment they touch the surface and whose vitality is added.

The process by which colorful organisms, closer to unspecified forms or momentary phenomena such as fire, water, fog, or smoke, exist wet on xuan paper and slowly dry, at a certain point also appears like human life that lives in compliance.

In Movement in Damp Light(2021), where drawings made on fragile xuan paper are attached to large glass, highlighting helplessness and transparency, free-spirited brushstrokes directly release the lively, unrestrained energy of the inner self.

When epoxy is poured to finish the work in order to seal in the intense colors of the moment paint seeps into paper, the artist’s self, resisting calm everyday life, seeps into the work like foam forming as it goes against flowing water and collides with finely broken waves.

Among the new works installed in the exhibition space, six small works from the ‘Fragment Window’(2021) series, measuring approximately 25cm wide and 17cm high, are a series in which drawings cut to size are attached beneath patterned glass.

While they follow the same working method of entrusting the brush to flow without a clear purpose, the larger works speak of the inner self through various colored lines painted in layers, whereas the small ‘Paper on Glass’ series installed throughout the exhibition space deals with fragments of everyday life through planes of color.

The drawings are those she has made in everyday life, and they appear in diverse yet not vaguely splendid colors, with her daily moods and emotions as their subjects. Just as not every moment of a day divided into 24 hours can be beautiful, ‘Paper on Glass’ contains an inner state calmer than that of her other works, and an energy that has become even more humid.

The reason we always remember summer weather as hot and humid is that the higher the temperature becomes, the more moisture increases in the air. In other words, the flow of moisture is revealed on the surface and is felt even by us.

Like fire and water, which have completely opposite properties, yet affect each other and coexist through interaction, the energy contained in Minjung Key’s work seems at times like blazing fire and at times like quietly flowing water.

By presenting a cross section of her own day, which carries ambivalent aspects, she leads us to think that in the contemporary society we live in, concepts in ambivalent relationships may overturn one another’s value, but likewise, through that process, they build relationships of interest and communicate, so perhaps emotions, situations, thoughts at opposite poles, and all such things coexist, creating the energy of the human self and forming even the life of the present.
