PKM Trinity Gallery presents 《Encounter》, a solo exhibition by Sangbin IM (b. 1976), from January 28 to February 25, 2010. Taking “encounter”—a meeting or collision—as its central theme, the exhibition brings together photographic works that transform everyday landscapes by combining digital technology with analog processes, and the precision of photography with painterly sensibility.

After graduating from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University, Sangbin IM received an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale School of Art and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Columbia University.

Emerging as a distinctive artist through photographic works marked by his characteristic painterly sensibility, IM has expanded his experimental practice across a range of media, including photography, drawing, and video, and has rapidly gained attention from both the art market and critics in Korea and abroad.

He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland, New York, and Seoul, and has exhibited at institutions including the Seoul Museum of Art and Seoul National University Museum of Art, as well as at media_city seoul 2006.

His works are held in collections including the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and the UBS Collection, and have continued to receive favorable responses at major international art fairs such as Art Basel in Switzerland and The Armory Show in New York, earning recognition for both their artistic merit and international potential.

Inspired by Seoul and New York, the two major cities in which the artist has been active, the works in this exhibition suggest encounters between nature and the city, tradition and modernity, photography and painting, and the digital and the analog, as well as the diverse relationships and collisions that arise from these encounters.

IM photographs buildings and landscapes commonly encountered in contemporary cities and then reconstructs the image through digital manipulation, exaggerating or distorting selected elements. His photographic practice departs from the conventional method of capturing a subject from a single viewpoint at a single moment.

Instead, he photographs different parts of a subject hundreds of times, at different moments and from multiple viewpoints, before assembling them into a single image that appears to capture one instantaneous scene. This process, which begins with individual fragments and gradually builds toward a complete image, recalls the traditional process of constructing a painting across the surface of a canvas.

In interviews, IM has noted that his photographic practice originates in the language of painting. The works featured in this exhibition particularly emphasize his painterly methods, with elements such as skies and streets in the photographs drawn directly from his own paintings.

Sangbin IM combines and juxtaposes highly familiar urban scenes encountered in everyday life, including tunnels in central Seoul, Cheonggyecheon Stream, and Deoksugung Palace, through his distinctive visual method. Brought into new relationships by the artist and made to coexist within a single image, these familiar elements are rendered unfamiliar, exerting a subtle power that draws viewers into a deeply lyrical resonance with everyday landscapes.

The exhibition at PKM Trinity Gallery will present twelve new works. Through his distinctive visual language, IM renders the objects and scenes of our lived reality at once familiar and profoundly strange. His works invite viewers to look anew at everyday landscapes while offering an opportunity to reconsider the multilayered cultural, historical, and environmental elements that coexist within contemporary society.
