Installation view of 《Structures》 © Soul Art Space

To mark its 16th anniversary, Soul Art Space presents 《Sangbin IM: Structures》 in Gallery 1 from December 2, 2021 to February 8, 2022.

Although IM works within the medium of photography, he does not rely on a single image captured on an intact frame of film. Instead, he constructs photographs by assembling and distorting multiple photographic fragments, while composing elements such as the sky, ground, buildings, figures, light, and shadow according to the arrangements, colors, and modes of depiction that most clearly express his distinctive visual language.

In this exhibition, Sangbin IM focuses on translating perceptual ways of seeing a scene into an organic flow. Although each work is photographed around a single subject, each adopts a different format and structure. As an artist who generates numerous narratives from a single landscape through multiple shots, IM explains that one story emerges when attention is directed toward a particular aspect of a place, while another appears when a different aspect comes into focus.

He therefore gathers as many narratives as possible and considers how they can be comprehensively organized and presented, creating structurally constructed photographs. In this sense, he can be described as an artist who places greater emphasis on making photographs than simply taking them.

Sangbin IM works across a wide range of media, including photography, painting, video, and installation, though his recent practice can broadly be divided into photography and painting. He primarily uses painting to explore working processes and ideas closely connected to photography, as well as concepts that cannot be fully expressed through the photographic medium.

His photographs embody figurative maximalism, while his paintings embody abstract minimalism; accordingly, his photographic works tend to emphasize visual form, whereas his paintings focus more on tactile texture. Through this exhibition, Soul Art Space hopes to prompt renewed reflection on what it means “to see.”
