《Cross+Scape》 brings together 27 photographers from Korea and the ten ASEAN member states—Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam—to examine cultural commonalities and differences across Asia while seeking new relationships within contemporary art.

More meaningful than ever, the exhibition aims to present new possibilities and creative content, bringing the identity of Southeast Asian photography to the fore while generating new discourse around it.

The exhibition takes “landscape” as its theme, presenting the distinctive cultural forms and differing perspectives of each country under the concept of “landscapes (scape) that cross, communicate, and converge.” Alongside landscape photography distinctive to Southeast Asia, one of the exhibition’s highlights is a body of works created by seven Korean photographers who traveled directly to the ten ASEAN countries and reinterpreted their landscapes through their own unique perspectives and sensibilities.

The diverse visual languages of the Korean artists reinterpret Southeast Asian landscapes in a variety of ways: some works condense the histories, cultures, and political circumstances of ASEAN countries into symbolic imagery; others reconfigure icons of popular culture in contemporary forms; still others incorporate humor and imagination through inventive digital manipulation.

The participation of seven Korean fine-art photographers, whose practices reveal distinct artistic sensibilities and individual approaches rather than conventional realist landscape photography, has further broadened this diversity. As a result, the landscape photographs produced through this project take such varied forms that the conventional category of landscape itself becomes increasingly difficult to define.

The 27 participating photographers present, through contemporary photography, the distinctive traditions and identities of Southeast Asia as well as the diverse phenomena emerging through the region’s ongoing globalization.

This represents an expansion beyond Western-centered photography toward a broader context, offering a glocal approach as an alternative to Western-centrism and a new attempt grounded in multicultural thinking to move beyond Western-centered interpretations of contemporary photography.

《Cross+Scape》 also presents the diverse forms that landscape can take in contemporary photography within the broader framework of artistic creation. Ranging from straight photography to works that more actively investigate the image through compositing, reproduction, and manipulation, the exhibition brings together multiple approaches within a single space, where they communicate and converge to generate new aesthetic possibilities.

Beyond simply proposing fresh and unfamiliar landscapes, the exhibition actively visualizes the relationships between photography and contemporary art, and between Asia and the wider world.
