Fourteen Artists Selected for Transfer

Korean and German artists will collaborate on a joint art project over a three-year period. “Transfer Korea-NRW 2011-2013” is a cultural exchange program between Korea and Germany organized by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) in western Germany. In late 2011, during the first year of the project, jurors from both countries selected fourteen artists through a review process that included studio visits.

This year, the artists will participate in residency programs in their partner country, followed by exhibitions and the publication of a critical anthology in 2013.

On January 12, the Cultural Affairs Department of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, organizer of Transfer, held an information session at the Goethe-Institut Korea in Seoul. Director Christian Esch, referring to Korean artists such as Nam June Paik and Isang Yun who were active in Germany, emphasized that “this project is a process and journey through which artists from Korea and Germany meet and exchange ideas.”

The participating artists are Kira Kim, Na Hyun, Won Seoung Won, Yeesookyung, Jung Seung, Jung Yeondoo, and Kyungah Ham from Korea, alongside Jan Albers, Luka Fineisen, Manuel Graf, Erika Hock, Seb Koberstädt, Sascha Pohle, and Juergen Staack from Germany, for a total of fourteen artists.

Major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia include Düsseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, and Münster. Since Korean miners and nurses were dispatched to the region in 1964, it has remained home to a significant Korean community. As a public cultural funding body, the NRW Cultural Affairs Department initiated this collaboration with Korea following previous cultural exchange projects with Turkey and France.

The project involves Korea’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Alternative Space LOOP, and ARKO Art Center, as well as Germany’s Kunstmuseum Bonn, Osthaus Museum Hagen, and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. Residency partners include Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, Seoul Art Space Mullae, and Changdong Residency.

The fourteen artists selected in 2011 will visit their partner cities during the first half of the year (January–June) and participate in two-month residency programs. During their stay, they will engage with local curators and critics, and will subsequently present their work in both countries between October 2013 and early 2014.

A critical anthology is also planned, featuring essays by Korean and German critics on contemporary art in Asia and Europe, including texts dedicated to the participating artists and their practices.
