Phillips will hold its New Now auction of modern and contemporary art in London on April 10. Led by Turner Prize winner Tony Cragg’s bronze sculpture Runner (2009), the auction will also feature works by Joseph Yaeger, Jennifer Guidi, Rudolf Stingel, Andy Warhol, and Korean artist Kim Tschang Yeul among its highlights.

One of the key lots, Rudolf Stingel’s Untitled, is a representative work from the artist’s 'Silver Paintings' series, demonstrating his experimental approach to unconventional materials and the process of making art. The work consists of vertical stripes in subtle silver, blue-gray, and metallic gray tones, with hints of red emerging beneath the surface.

Through an approach that regards painting not as a finished image but as a process in itself, Untitled challenges conventional notions of authorship and originality. Departing from established formats while incorporating postmodern theory, the work holds particular significance within Stingel’s practice.

Andy Warhol’s Shadow marks an important turning point in his artistic practice, reflecting his exploration of abstraction and death. The work originated from a Polaroid photograph staged by Ronnie Cutrone, Warhol’s studio assistant, and destabilizes perceptions of presence and absence through a mysterious shadow left without any identifiable form.

Reflecting Warhol’s interest in light and darkness, the work forms part of his 'Shadows' series, expanding the realm of abstraction while maintaining the distinctive artistic sensibility and style that consistently characterize his practice.

Phillips will also introduce “ULTIMATE” to its New Now auction for the first time. “ULTIMATE” is a platform presenting carefully selected works chosen by Phillips, with a particular focus on photography. Since its launch in 2014, more than 70 artists presented through “ULTIMATE” have achieved auction records, while more than 60 artists have made their auction debuts through the platform.

For “ULTIMATE” at this London New Now auction, Phillips will present works by Korean artists Sangbin IM and Rala Choi. Sangbin IM’s Central Park 2, a large-scale work measuring nearly two meters in width, symbolically reflects the urban environments and cultural landmarks the artist has continuously explored throughout his practice.

Sangbin IM seamlessly combines fantasy and reality to create singular surreal landscapes. In Central Park 2, he meticulously combines hundreds of different images to construct what appears to be a single scene. Multiple perspectives, moments, and realities coexist within a single frame in Sangbin IM’s work, and Central Park 2 exemplifies this characteristic.

In particular, the work is an important early example of his practice, highlighting both his digital image-manipulation techniques and painterly sensibility while clearly demonstrating his distinctive approach to reconstructing reality.

Also included in the auction is Lovers, one of photographer Rala Choi’s signature works. The photograph exemplifies the artist’s distinctive practice of blurring the boundaries between painting and photography through the unique texture of film.

It also stands out for its atmosphere, at once familiar and unfamiliar, as well as its striking expressiveness achieved through painterly aesthetics and color. In particular, the work was photographed using expired Portra 800 film, whose coarse grain and unpredictable effects lend the image a distinctive atmosphere and emotional depth.

Meanwhile, the preview for the London New Now auction will take place from April 4 at Phillips’ London galleries in Berkeley Square.
