The Kim Se-Choong Memorial Foundation (chaired by Nam-jo Kim) announced on the 14th that "the final recipients of the 2017 Kim Se-Choong Sculpture Award have been selected," and that the awards ceremony will be held on the 24th at the "Joy of Art" Grand Auditorium in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

The Kim Se-Choong Sculpture Award jury praised Kim Sooja for "using Korean bottari (wrapping cloths) as a medium to convey universal sculptural language reflecting themes such as migration, gender identity, communication, and disconnection." The jury further noted that "through her diverse body of work, including performances and video installations, she deeply explores the duality embedded in the fundamental aspects of art, such as time and space, life and death."

Hwan-kwon Lee, the recipient of the Young Sculptor Award, is recognized as a sculptor of the digital generation who reinterprets the traditional sculptural subject of the human body. His works distort the human form—elongating or flattening it—before materializing it through conventional sculptural techniques, prompting reflections on the ambiguous boundaries between reality and the virtual world.

The Special Award was posthumously awarded to Young-ja Yoon, a first-generation modern sculptor known for her works themed around motherhood. She also founded the Seokju Cultural Foundation in 1989, establishing and operating the Seokju Art Award to support future generations of artists.

Chun-man Lee, another Special Award recipient, was recognized for his contributions over the past 50 years in pioneering sacred sculpture, building a unique sculptural aesthetic.

Scholar, curator, and critic Beom-mo Yoon won the Korean Art Publication Award for his recent book “Korean Art Theory”, which compiles his extensive research and insights on Korean art.

The Kim Se-Choong Memorial Foundation annually selects and announces winners of the Kim Se-Choong Sculpture Award and the Korean Art Publication Award to honor the legacy of Se-Choong Kim (1928–1986), a first-generation modern sculptor in Korea best known for his statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin at Gwanghwamun Square. The foundation is currently chaired by poet Nam-jo Kim, a professor emeritus at Sookmyung Women’s University.

This year’s Kim Se-Choong Sculpture Award jury included sculptor Man-lin Choi, professor Nan-ji Yoon (Ewha Womans University), professor Joo Moon (Dean of the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University), Bok-ki Kim (CEO of Art in Culture), and professor Young-paik Jeon (Hongik University). The Korean Art Publication Award jury consisted of literary critic Iryeong Lee, sculptor Tae-jung Eom, and art critic Yeol Choi.
